Durante una entrevista televisada con Diane Sawyer, de la cadena ABC, que había suscitado gran expectación, Bruce Jenner habló de su identidad de género, de la que dijo estuvo confundido siempre. "Para todos los efectos, soy mujer", aseguró.
El ex campeón olímpico dijo que tenía esperanzas de que sus declaraciones públicas sobre la identidad de género hicieran una contribución positiva al mundo y rechazó tajantemente que la entrevista fuera una maniobra publicitaria para promover el programa televisivo de los Kardashian.
En la década de 1980, el exdeportista comenzó a tomar hormonas, se operó la nariz para que se la hicieran más chica y le eliminaron vello de la cara y el pecho.
Jenner y Kris matriarca del clan Kardashian, se divorciaron en diciembre luego de 25 años de matrimonio. Sin embargo, además de apoyarlo, vieron juntos la entrevista.
Kendal, Kylie, Brandon, Brody, Burton y Casey Jenner le brindaron todo su apoyo a su padre y solo enaltecieron su valentía. Lo mismo hicieron Kim, Khloe, Kourteny y Robert Kardashian, hijastros de Bruce. Todos expresaron sentirse orgullosos del ex atleta olímpico.
