Previamente, el 23, Twitter fue tomado como una tormenta con los hashtags #THEGIRLS, BLACKPINK THE GIRLS OST y #BLACKPINK_THE_GAME, que se convirtieron en tendencia mundial, además de los nombres de Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo y Rosé, quienes en el momento del lanzamiento se encontraban dando un espectacular show de el Oracle Park, en San Francisco, casa de los San Francisco Giants de las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol.
The Girls es la primera canción de BLACKPINK con la letra enteramente en inglés. Aunque será el OST de su videojuego oficial, disponible en App Store y Play Store, forma parte de su repertorio como grupo K-pop.
Jennie y Rosé están acreditadas como autoras del tema. Ryan Tedder y Danny Chung, los productores, trabajaron cabeza a cabeza con las chicas, quienes también participaron.

El escenario de BLACKPINK, renacido como un avatar en 3D, brinda una experiencia diferente a los fans de todo el mundo. La coreografía del baile de The Girls fue creada por el equipo de baile Lee Jeong (Lee Yi-jung) de YGX, así como los avatares y trajes escénicos en los que las Pinks participaron en el proceso de producción.
